Taught degrees submissions refers to submissions for undergraduate students (except those at the Department for Continuing Education) and students studying for BTh, MA, BPhil, MPhil, MSt, MSc by Coursework, MTh, MBA, Master of Fine Art, BCl, MJur, BM, BMBCh, and MPP.
1. Check your deadline published in the Examination Regulations and in your course handbook. This is the date and time by which your work must be submitted by. If there is a discrepancy in the published deadlines, the published Examination Regulations takes precedence.
2. Format your work (for example layout, number of copies, and type of binding) as set out in the Examination Regulations or in your course handbook. If unsure, please consult your departmental administrator.
3. Know your candidate number. This is available from the Examination and Assessments page in Student Self Service. Please note, it is not the same as your University card number.
4. Hard copy submissions:
- The submission desk at the Examination Schools is open from 08:30-17:00, Monday-Friday. Arrive at the desk in good time to complete the submission process. The time of your submission is taken when your receipt is stamped.
- If the published submission deadline falls on a closure day check the submission requirements with your department.
5. Before your arrival at the Examination Schools:
- Ensure you have an envelope prepared for each assessment you are handing in (multiple copies of the same assessment should go in the same envelope). If you are required to hand in two copies of the same assessment, these should be in the same envelope.
- Complete a ‘Declaration of Authenticity’ form for each assessment. You should not attach this form to your work but must be included separately in the envelope you are handing in.
- If you have a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), for example, dyslexia, you should obtain an SpLD information form (Form Code No. 2D) and it is your responsibility to attach it to each copy of your submitted work.
- Each envelope should have your candidate number on and be addressed to: Chair of Examiners for the [insert your examination title here], C/O Examination Schools, High Street, Oxford, OX1 4BG
6. On your arrival at the Examination Schools:
- Fill in a separate receipt for each assessment you are handing in (receipts do not go in the envelope).
- Check your envelope contains your work, together with any forms you require. The SpLD information form can also be obtained from the Examination Schools (from the left hand side of the submission desk; salmon coloured).
- If you have a Specific Learning Difficulty, for example, dyslexia, you should obtain an SpLD information form (Form Code No.2D) to be attached to each copy of your submitted work.
- Hand in your work and receipt at the submissions desk. The receipt is stamped with the date and time you submitted your work and signed by a member of the Submissions team. You will receive a yellow copy of the receipt.
- Keep your receipt in case of any queries.
You are advised:
Responsibility for the work rests with you at all times until issue of the receipt, regardless of the method of submission.
- Work may be submitted in advance of the deadline.
- You may submit your work in person, ask another person to submit on your behalf, post via Royal Mail or courier or leave it in the Examination Schools post box. Sending your assignment by post or courier means that you will not obtain your copy of a receipt and you cannot guarantee the submission time or the condition of work submitted in this way. Leaving the work in the Examination Schools post-box is not recommended as it is not checked on a regular basis.
- The issue of a receipt does not guarantee that submitted work will be accepted for assessment if it has been presented after the stipulated deadline.
- There are no printing facilities in the Examination Schools.
- Submitted work may not be withdrawn for revision or re-submission without the Proctor’s permission.
Work submitted after the deadline:
It is your responsibility to ensure that your work is submitted by the deadline. Work submitted after the deadline will be processed in the standard manner and, in addition, the late submission will be reported to the Proctors' Office. If you are late in handing work in you should consult your college senior tutor as a matter of urgency.
All work that it submitted after the deadline without prior permission will incur a late submission fee, unless this fee is waived by the Proctors. In 2016/17, the fee for late submission of a thesis or other exercise is £40. Information on how to pay the late submission fee, or apply to the Proctors for the fee to be waived, is contained in the email sent to candidates who have submitted their work late.
Late submissions (on the day of the deadline)
In accordance with section 14.9 of the Regulations for the conduct of University Examinations, the Examiners are authorised to mark late work received on the day of the deadline and to apply an academic penalty to each piece for lateness, in accordance with their established conventions. If the examiners do not hear otherwise from the Proctors, they may release their agreed mark according to the usual procedures.
Late submissions (after the day of the deadline)
In accordance with section 14.10 of the Regulations for the conduct of University Examinations, late submissions that were received past the date of the deadline are marked, but the results not released until the Chair of the Examination Board has received authorisation to do so from the Proctors’ Office.
If you fail to submit work by the deadline, the Taught Degrees team will write to you to remind you that a deadline has passed. When a candidate fails to submit work, it is very serious: you may fail not only that paper, but all the papers you have been entered for at the same time (eg all the assessment units for Finals). If you discover that you have missed a deadline, you should do one of the following:
- if you have a good reason for both missing the deadline and for needing more time to complete the work before submitting it, then you should apply for an extension and consult with your College Office or Senior Tutor immediately.
- otherwise, you should submit the work straight away, and ask your college to write with your reasons for late submission to the Proctors who will decide whether to allow the work to be accepted.
Making changes after submission
It is not possible to make changes to work after it has been submitted without the Proctors’ permission, which they will only give in very exceptional circumstances.
If you do submit additional items after your initial submission, these will be held at the Examination Schools pending further instruction from the Proctors' Office. Your College Office or Senior Tutor will need to request permission, on your behalf, from the Proctors for the work to be released to the Examiners.
Topics 8 and 15 new requirements: November 2017 (Period 35) and May 2018 (Period 36)
All students submitting a project on topic 8 or topic 15 in either November2017 or May 2018 MUST use sector specific organisations, based on the Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB).
For period 35 and 36 these sectors are:
Manufacturers, assemblers and distributors of aircraft and aircraft parts primarily used in commercial or private air transport. Excludes manufacturers of communications satellites, which are classified under Telecommunications Equipment
3577 Food Products
Food producers, including meatpacking, snacks, fruits, vegetables, dairy products and frozen seafood. Includes producers of pet food and manufacturers of dietary supplements, vitamins and related items. Excludes producers of fruit juices, tea, coffee, bottled water and other non-alcoholic beverages, which are classified under Soft Drinks.
Operators and managers of hotels, motels, lodges, resorts, spas and campgrounds.
These sectors will apply to students submitting for the first time or for students changing company and/or topic in both the November 2017 (Period 35) and May 2018 (Period 36).
The industry sectors will be updated by Oxford Brookes and published each year in June/July for the next two submission periods.
For all topics other than 8 and 15, please also note the requirement to base your project on recent organisational activity or processes rather than historical events. (For this purpose ‘historical’ refers to activity that took place more than the three full calendar years preceding the start of the current submission period.)
For example if you were proposing to submit a project in May 2018 for topic 19 the merger or acquisition would have to have taken place AFTER 1 JANUARY 2015.
The main focus of your project research must be an analysis/evaluation of the project topic area issues in the context of your chosen organisation.
